A popular chain around the country, Las Iguanas serves fresh and authentic Mexican, Brazilian & South American food & cocktails.

This review was one I did not expect to be writing. That sounds strange, I know, but it’s because I just didn’t know they even had vegan options until I found myself in their branch in Exeter smiling at the menu in front of me. I was pleasantly surprised by not just the vegan options but also how helpful and informed their staff were, asking if anyone was vegetarian or vegan right away and offering advisement on the options available.

If you go onto their website, you even have the option to filter the online menus by dietary requirement, including vegan. This is especially useful for when you are trying to find a restaurant that is worth venturing to that will actually have nice, vegan food on the menu.

The dish I decided on was the Mexican fajitas. I was hungry. I was so surprised when it arrived how substantial and delicious it all looked! I got an entire dish full of sautéed Portobello mushrooms, bell peppers and onions cooked in a mix of spices and served alongside guacamole, jalapeños, roasted tomato salsa and a stack of wheat tortillas.

I am a fan of fajitas so I was always going to enjoy it. I like having lots of different tastes all together, wrapped up nicely in a carb… what’s not to like? Whilst some of the mushrooms were slightly over-cooked, I have to say that overall I was very impressed with the amount (a very important factor) and taste of my meal.

My boyfriend, who is also vegan, went for their Moqueca De Palmitos, which is a Brazilian coconut curry. This came with butternut squash, palm hearts & spinach all served in a creamy coconut curry sauce with charred red peppers, garlic & fresh tomatoes. This was really tasty and I would definitely get this all to myself next time.

The food was made that much better by the fantastic cocktails they serve here. Not only are they delicious but they are now offering a two-for-one deal on all of their cocktails at all times… Amazing!

Overall I would give Las Iguanas a 7.5/10.

Whilst they had a few more vegan options than a lot of the big chains as of yet, the food wasn’t overly innovative. However, the food was good and the cocktails were a nice treat.

Plus, being able to go out for dinner in town with your boyfriend’s grandparents and not having to be that awkward vegan who can’t eat anywhere was a really great bonus!

Where can you find them? Everywhere. Just check their website for their branch nearest to you.
